The core business district of Harare will have cameras installed by the city to deal with infractions of the city's bylaws and traffic infractions. This was stated by Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume at the early this week launching of two vehicles supplied by City Parking at Rufaro Stadium.

According to Mafume, the council gave City Parking permission to search for cameras to place at strategic locations throughout the city and work with the Zimbabwe National Road Administration (Zinara) to find drivers who fail to pay for their licenses. "We are here to receive these cars today, and we expect you to treat people with respect and not get out of the lorries that they drive around. We don't want city municipal officers beating people up." In order to computerize our system and enable our municipal police to arrest anyone without a Zinara license, we will be speaking with Zinara. In order to make it simple to identify anyone who violate local ordinances, we will also install cameras, Mafume stated.

According to Mafume, the council gave management the authority to obtain supplies and label city roads. The mayor added that anytime traffic signals are out of commission, Harare has directed municipal police to station themselves at every crossroads in the city to direct traffic. According to Mafume, that would lessen traffic in the core business district.

The mayor chastised municipal police officers for their disrespect for the community, threatening to fire those who break the law. Mafume asked building owners in the city to update their structures, stating that they did not want lives lost as a result of breaking city ordinances.
