The central business district (CBD) building owners have received a warning from the City of Harare to renovate their properties. In addition, the owners were instructed by the city to submit formal proposals within two weeks. Town clerk Hosiah Chisango stated in a statement on Wednesday of this week that the specifications for the restoration of decaying structures complied with local ordinances. "All building owners and occupants in the central business district (CBD) and those outside the CBD are hereby given notice by the City of Harare to renew or regenerate their buildings and/or properties, either through repairs, refurbishments, and/or repainting," Chisango stated.

According to him, certain buildings' status didn't comply with these regulations. The bylaws provide that no one shall permit any building on their property to endanger the health of anyone who uses it or resides there. Furthermore, he stated that the buildings shouldn't endanger people's health, produce offensive smoke, fumes, or odors, or be ugly or a disgrace to the community. Along the city's main thoroughfares, such as Robert Mugabe Way connecting Rotten Row to Samora Machel Avenue and Jason Moyo Street connecting Rotten Row to Simon Vengesayi Muzenda Street, the council identified a few structures that need to be renovated.

Other structures can be found along Leopald Takawira Street, which runs from downtown tuckshops to Westgate retail center, Julius Nyerere Way, which runs from the Railways overpass to Sam Nujoma Street, and Samora Machel Avenue, which runs from the Kuwadzana roundabout to Msasa. Additionally, the city identified buildings on First Street between Robert Mugabe Way and Samora Machel Avenue, Seventh Street between Nelson Mandela Avenue and Josiah Tongagara Street, Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa Road between Robert Mugabe Way and Harare Drive, Seke Road between Railways Flyover and Maruta shops, Airport Road between Arcadia and Robert Mugabe International Airport and Fidel Castro Road, and Simon Mazoradze between Julius Nyerere Way and Mbudzi Interchange would also be identified.

“Accordingly, all property owners and occupants of buildings in the areas stated above are requested to comply with the afore-said by-laws or submit written representations in connection with this matter within two weeks of this public notice, to the director of works... failing which council shall apply the requirements of section 56 of the said by-laws to enforce compliance,” Chisango said.
